He was the eldest son of a grocer, who hoped to have “Oscar”, as he was known in his childhood, follow into the family business. This, unfortunately for his father but fortunately for the rest of the world, was not to be. From a very early age Monet demonstrated a talent and a desire for art. Later in life he would say to a friend, “I would love to paint as a bird sings”. His natural tendency was strong enough that, after the family had moved to Le Havre for his father to enter more deeply into the family’s wholesale grocery business, drawing lessons were added to the six-year-old’s basic school curriculum. By the age of fifteen he was becoming quite well known for his mocking caricatures of both his teachers and local public figures. Demonstrating his family’s business acumen, he sold many of these and made a tidy profit.Monet’s boyhood in Le Havre was marked by his love for the outdoors. He frequently roamed the rough northern coastline, (often skipping school to do so) and soaking up its scenic beaches and cliffs. He was fascinated with the shifts in light and color as the weather changed, a fascination that never left him and was to have a major influence in his art throughout his career. (con't)

I love art. and I love painting. But what makes this ebook so much more wonderful is the fact that the reproductions are not hampered by the need to print them with only a few ink colors. These reproductions seen on my computer are incredible because they are lighted in a way that print cannot. I have seen in person many of these paintings and I think these images are almost like standing in the gallery or museum viewing them live.
