Etched on the Memory-The presence of Rembrandt in the prints of Goya & Picasso Details

Both Goya and Picasso were endowed with inquisitive, all-seeing and all-absorbing gazes - their power to retain and recall visual impressions was very acute. Both artists were effected by the work of Rembrandt. This book investigates the ways in which Goya and Picasso approached Rembrandt's oeuvre, appropriated his inventions, motifs, techniques, and incorporated them into their own works.

Reviews

Goya said he had only three masters: nature, Velazquez and Rembrandt. The book, Etched on the Memory, is printed on good quality paper and presented in a medium sized format (8.5 x 11 inches). The font is easy on the eyes and the images, although not reproduced in their original size, are clear and detailed enough to suffice for the purpose of visual evidence in comparing the works of the artists. Not a coffee table volume and not aimed at the casual reader but presupposes a familiarity with the works of all three artists.I recommend having examples on hand that are reproduced in their original size or as close as possible to the original size. Some good inexpensive books to have on hand are:"The Complete Etchings of Rembrandt: Reproduced in Original Size" by Dover Publications."The Complete Etchings of Goya" by Crown Publishers."Picasso: The Complete Vollard Suite Prints" by the British Museum Press. As for the material of the book, it is divided into three sections and the table of contents include:Section one (with aprox. 115 image reproductions)Goya/Rembrandt:Visual Memory Isadora Rose-de Viejo, authorI Goya. 'the aragonese Rembrandt' Documentary evidenceII 'The wizards of Rembrandt, the gnomes of Goya' Visual evidenceRembrandt prints in Madrid during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuriesSection two (with aprox. 71 image reproductions)Picasso's Dialogue with Rembrandt's art Janie Cohen, authorSection ThreeSummary Catalogue Rose-de Viejo, compilerBibliographyGoya and Rembrandt.Rose-de Viejo writes "The authors of all major studies on Francisco de Goya since the 1830s have acknowledged and accepted...the relationship between Goya and Rembrandt. The endeavor to see Rembrandt through Goya's eyes is intended neither to diminish the Spaniard's stature as one of the most original and skillful artists of all time, nor to deny the myriad other visual materials to which he was exposed."Rose-de Viejo asks the questions "Can we identify the works by Rembrandt with which Goya must have been familiar and can we establish precisely how and to what extent the Dutchman's art impacted on the Spaniard's?"In a scholarly manner, she presents the documentary and visual evidence in a quest to answer these questions.Picasso and Rembrandt.Janie Cohen writes "The Dutch master made his first appearance in Picasso's work between 1933 and 1936, most notably in a number of prints included in the Vollard Suite...Rembrandt's paintings, etchings and drawings served Picasso as a sustained and compelling focus of pictorial exploration".
